The Dorrit Hoffleit Undergraduate Astronomy Research Fellowship at Yale is a prestigious scholarship opportunity that is named in honour of Dr E. Dorrit Hoffleit, a senior research astronomer at Yale who dedicated more than fifty years of her life to the University’s Department of Astronomy. Dr. Hoffleit was a remarkable woman who also served as the director of the Maria Mitchell Observatory on Nantucket Island for more than two decades. During her time there, she ran summer programs for hundreds of students, many of whom went on to have successful careers in astronomy.

  1. Hoffleit was the author of the Bright Star Catalogue and the co-author of The General Catalogue of Trigonometric Stellar Parallaxes. Her outstanding contributions to astronomy earned her the George Van Biesbroeck Prize from the American Astronomical Society in 1988. She lived to be 100 years old, and through her teaching and summer programs, she inspired a lifelong interest in Astronomy in thousands of young women and men.

The Yale University Dorrit Hoffleit Undergraduate Research Scholarship is a fully-funded research grant worth $1000. It is open to undergraduate science majors in Astronomy, Astrophysics, or Physics who are in their 2nd or 3rd year of undergraduate study, and of any nationality. Students with a strong desire to continue to graduate school are particularly encouraged to apply. The scholarship offers a bi-weekly stipend of $450, accommodation within Yale’s historic Residential Colleges, weekly meal vouchers for 15 meals at the residential colleges, and up to $1000 in travel expense reimbursements.
