West African Research Association (WARA) Residency Fellowships For West African Scholars

Are you a West African scholar who is interested in enhancing transatlantic exchange and collaboration? If so, the West African Research Association (WARA), with funding from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the US State Department, is offering residencies for WARA member institutions to host scholars on their campuses. Each residency will last between four to eight weeks and will provide the visiting scholar with opportunities for library research, guest lecturing, and/or collaborative work with American colleagues. It’s important to note that residencies are short-term exchanges and are not meant to fill faculty positions.

Benefits of WARA Residency Fellowships
WARA will pay the round-trip travel costs of the selected scholar as well as a stipend of $3,500 to help cover meals and local transportation costs. Host institutions are encouraged to provide additional support in the form of housing, office space, library privileges, laboratory facilities, or other supports for the period of the residency.

Requirements for WARA Residency Fellowships
Applications can only be made by WARA member institutions to bring a specific scholar to their campus. Applications from individual scholars will not be accepted. Host institutions need to provide additional support in the form of housing, office space, library privileges, laboratory facilities, or other supports for the period of the residency.

Application Documents
The application requires several documents, including the name and contact information of a representative of the WARA host institution, a 50-80 word abstract of the proposed residency, a proposal of no more than six double-spaced pages profiling the visiting scholar, the scholar’s curriculum vitae, a letter of interest from the scholar, a letter of support from a relevant administrator (dean, department chair, etc.) at the host institution, and proof of citizenship in the form of a copy of the scholar’s passport. Please note that only scholars who are eligible for non-immigrant visas to the U.S. will be considered.
