Are you an international student looking to pursue a Masters or PhD degree in Germany? If so, the Heinrich Böll Foundation may have just the scholarship for you. The foundation awards scholarships to international students who have gained their university entrance qualification from a school outside of Germany and wish to study for a Masters or PhD degree in Germany.
The scholarship program allots scholarships to international students, both EU and non-EU, who are not educated in Germany. The scholarships are towards Masters or PhD degrees in all subjects offered at state or state-recognized universities in Germany. For EU students, Master’s degree courses at state or state-recognized universities in Germany, Switzerland, and other EU member states are also possible.
The scholarship values vary depending on the student’s status as an EU or non-EU student and the type of degree they are pursuing. For example, non-EU Master’s students receive €934 per month plus various individual allowances, possibly health insurance, and tuition fees are possible in certain cases in Germany. Meanwhile, non-EU PhD students receive €1,200 per month plus €100 mobility allowance per month, plus various individual allowances and tuition fees are not possible.
To be eligible for the scholarship, international Master’s students must have earned their university entrance qualification outside Germany and may apply before commencing their Master’s program or up to the end of the first semester of the Master’s program. International doctoral students must have proof of admission to doctoral studies by a state or state-recognized university, as a rule in Germany, and preliminary work must have been completed by the application date with a valid timetable for completion submitted. Proof of German proficiency at Level B2 or DSH 2 (with certificate) is also required for both Master’s and PhD students.
If you’re interested in applying for this scholarship, visit the official website for details on how to apply and the deadlines for submission. The online application portal closes on March 1st or September 1st for PhD studies only.
