The Hatfield Lioness Scholarship is a unique opportunity for female students from developing countries where access to tertiary education is limited. The scholarship is funded by alumni and friends of Hatfield College, Durham University, as well as other sources supportive of its aims. The scholarship was launched in 2018 to celebrate 30 years of women students at Hatfield College, Durham University.
The Lioness Scholarship aims to enable a female student to undertake postgraduate study at Durham University. The successful candidate must have the academic and personal qualities to complete and benefit from a postgraduate course and act as a positive ambassador for their home country in Durham. Upon their return home, they should put their enhanced knowledge and skills gained from the master’s programme to good use for the benefit of their society.
The scholarship covers full payment of university tuition fees, a stipend for living expenses, fully funded accommodation at Hatfield College, one return economy air ticket from the home country to the UK, and the cost of return travel between the UK airport and Durham City. The scholarship also provides a ‘settling in allowance’ on arrival, as well as covering the cost of a UK visa and the UK Health surcharge.
To be eligible for the scholarship, the applicant must have applied for and been offered an unconditional place in their chosen master’s programme by June 2024. They must not receive any other scholarship to fund their postgraduate studies and must be a national of one of the developing countries. Additionally, they must hold a relevant honours degree of sufficient standard to be admitted to their chosen Master’s course and have all other course entry requirements, including the relevant English language qualification. They should not hold a Master’s degree, and should not otherwise have the financial means to study for a Master’s degree in the UK.
The application deadline for the Hatfield Lioness Scholarship is January 31, 2024. Interested applicants must apply to Durham University to study their chosen Master’s programme, and then apply to Hatfield College to be considered for the Lioness Scholarship by the College deadline of March 31, 2024.
