The MIT-Empowering the Teachers (MIT-ETT) program stands as a beacon of innovation and education reform, targeting faculty members from African universities for a semester-long, immersive experience aimed at revolutionizing teaching methodologies in science and engineering. This initiative, sponsored by NNPC Ltd. & TotalEnergies EP Nigeria, is specifically designed for selected faculty members, known as ETT Fellows, to immerse themselves in advanced student-centred teaching techniques. The goal is clear: to nurture a new wave of science and engineering education in Africa’s tertiary institutions, thereby preparing students to meet the challenges of the modern job market with robust problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
The current landscape of science and engineering education in African universities reveals a critical need for a shift towards creativity, innovation, and problem-solving. Historically, these institutions have suffered from neglect and underinvestment, leading to a decline in educational standards. Traditional curricula and assessment methods have emphasized rote memorization and teacher-centric lectures, rather than fostering an environment where critical thinking and creative problem-solving thrive. In response, the MIT-ETT program aims to equip its Fellows with the tools to inspire change and cultivate a new generation of industry-ready graduates.
The NNPC/TotalEnergies ETT Fellowship offers a comprehensive package covering travel, living expenses, and instructional materials. Throughout their tenure at MIT, Fellows will engage in a variety of activities designed to enrich their teaching practices, including attending classes, developing new curricular materials, and participating in seminars focused on curriculum design and the cultural aspects of MIT. To be eligible, applicants must exhibit a passion for curriculum development, hold a Ph.D., and currently serve as a faculty member in a Nigerian university within specified disciplines. The application deadline is set for May 26, 2024, with the selection process involving thorough vetting, interviews in Lagos, and final notifications by early July 2024.
