Have you been dreaming of obtaining a master’s degree from a prestigious institution in the Netherlands? Leiden University Excellence Scholarship Programme (LExS) is here to help you achieve that dream. This scholarship program is open to outstanding students from non-EEA/non-EFTA countries who are enrolling in a full-time master’s degree program at Leiden University.
Leiden University, located in the Netherlands, offers full-time masters programs in various fields, except for Leiden Law School’s LLM (non-advanced) and MSc programs, and study programs starting in February at the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Sciences, and Leiden Law School. The number and type of award of the scholarship depend on the budget available for each faculty department. The scholarship value ranges from €10,000 to €15,000 of the tuition fee, or it can cover the total tuition fee minus the statutory tuition fee. It’s important to note that the LExS is not a full scholarship, and non-EEA LExS recipients must still submit proof of sufficient funds for their student visa/residence permit application.
To be eligible for the LExS, students must have achieved excellent study results in their previous education, which is relevant to the master’s program for which they are applying. As an indication, the student should be among the top 10% of graduates in their previous study program. Applicants must have a non-EEA/non-EFTA passport and may not be eligible for support under the Dutch system of study grants and loans (Studiefinanciering). However, students applying for the LLM Advanced Studies programs or the MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy are exempt from these nationality restrictions.
To apply for the scholarship, students must first apply online for admission to a master’s program at Leiden University. After applying for admissions, if eligible, the LExS scholarship will be visible in the scholarships section of the online application system. Applicants must indicate clearly that they would like to apply for the LExS scholarship and upload their letter of motivation for the LExS scholarship. The deadline for programs starting in September is 1 February, while programs starting in February have a deadline of 1 October.
