The Scholarship Programme for Christian Young People is a unique opportunity for young individuals from crisis regions of the world or those being threatened in their countries because of their faith to pursue higher education studies in Hungarian host institutions. Managed by the State Secretariat for the Aid of Persecuted Christians and the Hungary Helps Program, the Hungary Helps Agency has been coordinating the Scholarship Programme since August 2020. The core mission of the SCYP is to empower Christian youth by providing them with the necessary knowledge and skills to become catalysts of development in their countries.
The Scholarship Programme offers a range of benefits to its recipients, including tuition-free education, a monthly stipend for living expenses, accommodation, reimbursement of travel costs, and medical insurance. The programme is open to young applicants who are older than 18 years of age by the time their education starts. An individual may win the scholarship only once at a study level. Scholarship holders must possess the relevant language and education certificates, and degrees requested by the host university of the selected degree programme, and commit themselves in the scholarship agreement to return to their home countries after the scholarship agreement ends, if local security and political conditions allow it so.
The selection process for the Scholarship Programme is rigorous and based on the cooperation between the Ministry of Human Capacities of Hungary and churches, pursuing humanitarian activities in crisis regions. Applicants must have a recommendation from their local Church along with the approval of the Deputy State Secretariat for the Aid of Persecuted Christians. Applications are considered formally eligible if the applicant has applied for a scholarship type and study programme available within the framework of the Scholarship Programme, has submitted the application and all documents as required no later than the application deadline, and has proved his/her language proficiency and the language skills meet the requirements of the Host Institution.
