Goethe-Institut Studio Quantum Residency Programme 2024

Are you an artist who is passionate about technology and innovation? Do you want to explore emerging quantum technologies through the lens of art? If so, the Studio Quantum program is the perfect opportunity for you. Developed by the Goethe-Institut, Studio Quantum is an international events and artist-in-residence program that investigates the impact of quantum computing on sustainability and climate change, the relationship between quantum technologies and artificial intelligence, and data security and encryption.

The project consists of three key strands: residencies, events, and a project showcase. During the residencies, artists will be invited to travel to a different location and incorporate quantum technologies into the subject matter of their work, or create work using quantum technologies accessed via the cloud. Artists are also invited to explore new techniques and methods in artistic production enabled by quantum technologies.

The Studio Quantum residences in 2024 are open to artists based in Germany, Ireland, Mexico, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Nigeria, India (States of Karnataka and Kerala), and South Africa, with one artist selected to represent each location. As part of their residency, artists will participate in a tutorial comprised of two weekly sessions over eight weeks, with experts from around the world in both the cultural sector and the field of quantum technologies presenting at the tutorial. They should also be willing to independently arrange meetings with experts in technology, research, and cultural organizations throughout their residency time.

In addition, each artist will participate in one event organized by the Goethe-Institut during their residency time, such as a talk, a presentation of preliminary work or approaches, participation at a local festival, an interview, or a networking event. The program provides a production budget of up to 3000 EUR, travel costs, accommodation, and an honorarium for all Studio Quantum artists-in-residence. Interested artists should submit a proposal outlining the focus of their residency time and what they hope to achieve, research, develop, or create. Applications close on February 11, 2024.
