Fulbright FLTA Program: An Exciting Opportunity for Aspiring Educators

Applications are now open for the 2024/25 Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program. This prestigious program offers fully funded opportunities for foreign graduates and educators from over 50 countries to teach in the United States.

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), the Fulbright FLTA Program is a part of the larger Fulbright Foreign Student Program. Its primary goal is to enhance Americans’ understanding of foreign cultures and languages. Participants are given the chance to serve as teaching assistants in over 30 different languages at numerous U.S. higher education institutions, thereby fostering cross-cultural exchange and global awareness.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the Fulbright FLTA Program, candidates must be nominated by either a U.S. Embassy or a Fulbright Commission. Independent applications are not accepted. Eligible applicants should:

  • Reside in the nominating country at the time of application.
  • Hold the equivalent of a U.S. Bachelor’s degree with a strong academic record. A Master’s degree is highly desirable for many institutions.
  • Be early-career teachers of English or educators in a related field, with prior teaching experience preferred.
  • Have a genuine interest in teaching their native language and culture to U.S. students.
  • Be fluent in English, demonstrated by recent test scores meeting the following minimums: 550 (Paper-Based TOEFL), 79-80 (Internet-Based TOEFL – IBT), or 6.0 (IELTS). Test scores should be sent to IIE using the institutional code 2326.

For further eligibility requirements, applicants should consult the program’s official guidelines.

Program Duration and Application Process

The Fulbright FLTA grant is a non-renewable opportunity lasting one academic year (approximately 9-10 months). As this is a non-degree program, those interested in pursuing a degree should consider the Fulbright Foreign Student Program instead.

If you believe you are a strong candidate for the FLTA program, you are encouraged to apply. Before submitting your application, make sure to notify the Fulbright FLTA Program affiliate in your home country. You can find a list of participating countries and their contact information on the official website.
