Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs 2024 International Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) Program For Young People

In 2020, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs (NL MFA) unveiled the Youth at Heart Strategy, a pioneering initiative aimed at amplifying the voices of young individuals in the realm of international policy, with a particular focus on enhancing education and youth employment opportunities. A cornerstone of this strategy has been the formation of the International Youth Advisory Committee (YAC), which plays a vital role in ensuring that the policies of the NL MFA are finely tuned to the aspirations and challenges faced by youth in key regions including the Sahel, Horn of Africa, Middle East, and North Africa.

The YAC, now in its second iteration from May 2023 through March 2024, blends the expertise of five original members with fresh perspectives from five new entrants. This dynamic group has embarked on a journey to deepen their understanding and forge resilience, thereby significantly contributing to the committee’s objectives and effectiveness.

Participants receive a monthly allowance of €158 and are provided with comprehensive coverage for all travel expenses to the Netherlands, including visa fees, flights, and accommodation. Key responsibilities include active participation in bi-annual meet-up weeks in the Netherlands, strategic collaboration with NL MFA policy officers, and engaging with stakeholders to foster inclusive policy discussions. Members are also expected to contribute to thematic policy development and advocate for youth participation in policymaking processes.

Eligibility criteria for applicants include being between 18 and 29 years of age by March 27, 2024, proficiency in English at a B1 level or higher, and a demonstrated commitment to community engagement and global issues. Applicants should also possess the technological means to participate in online meetings and be willing to dedicate an average of 10 hours per week to the program, excluding meet-up weeks in the Netherlands.

The selection process is thorough, beginning with an evaluation of CVs and motivation statements, followed by a group selection round to assess collaboration skills, and concluding with individual interviews for those shortlisted.
