The Centre on African Philanthropy and Social Investment (CAPSI) at the prestigious Wits Business School is excited to announce, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, a unique Doctoral Fellowship opportunity. This fellowship is part of the Non-Profit Sector and its Contribution to African Economies project and aims to empower young African scholars by offering them a chance to explore the significant impact non-profit organizations have on the continent’s economic landscape. Specifically, the fellowship focuses on researching how the non-profit sector can generate dignified and meaningful employment opportunities for Africa’s youth.
Open exclusively to doctoral candidates from African institutions within 17 specified countries, including Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, this initiative seeks to deepen understanding of the non-profit sector’s role in economic development. Selected fellows will embark on research endeavours that align with the project’s core mission, working alongside seasoned researchers to shed light on avenues for creating fulfilling work for young Africans within the non-profit sector.
The fellowship offers a comprehensive package for up to twenty (20) doctoral scholars, providing them with full funding of up to $30,000 per annum over a maximum five-year period. Applicants must demonstrate a keen interest in the contributions of the non-profit sector to Africa’s economies, specifically in creating employment that upholds dignity and fulfilment for the continent’s youth. Preference will be given to candidates from and focusing on research in Burkina Faso, DRC, Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The selection process will consider the applicant’s dedication to the theme, ability to collaborate effectively, and commitment to the fellowship’s duration, prioritizing those under the age of 35 and in the early stages of their doctoral journey.

Applications must include a current CV, a personal statement detailing research interests and motivations, a comprehensive research proposal, a recommendation letter from a supervisor, academic transcripts, proof of age, and proof of registration at an African university.
