Since January 2022, Ashesi University in Ghana and ETH Zurich have jointly offered a pioneering Master’s programme in Mechatronic Engineering. This collaboration has attracted 40 students from seven African countries, who are currently immersed in their studies at Ashesi University. The programme is expanding, with a third cohort set to begin their academic journey in 2024. Courses are delivered in block format, leveraging the expertise of faculty from both prestigious institutions.
The programme is a testament to a robust partnership among Ashesi University, ETH Zurich, industry leaders, and supporting partners. This collaboration is continually reinforced through regular faculty exchanges and industry visits. Mechatronics, which integrates mechanical, electronic, and software engineering, is a versatile field that drives innovations in automation, smart manufacturing, autonomous vehicles, surgical robots, and space exploration. The Master’s programme at Ashesi University, enriched by the combined teaching prowess of Ashesi and ETH Zurich faculty, aims to equip students with specialized skills and broad competencies essential for thriving in this forward-looking domain.
Students will gain hands-on experience through industrial internships and a Master’s project, blending theoretical knowledge with practical application. They will receive guidance from academic and industry experts, ensuring their training is grounded in world-class research and real-world expertise. Industry partners such as ABB, Barry Callebaut, Bühler, HPW, Holcim, Nestlé, and Tetra Pak, all of whom have a significant presence in Africa, actively contribute to the programme. These partners not only offer mentorship and internships but also provide full scholarships and job opportunities post-graduation, ensuring the programme meets regional market needs.
