The Africa Research Excellence Fund (AREF) is thrilled to unveil its newest initiative, the Towards Leadership Programme, in collaboration with the UKRI Medical Research Council. This groundbreaking programme is designed to nurture and develop the next generation of scientific leaders from Africa, equipping them with the tools they need to secure major funding opportunities in global health research, including those offered by UKRI MRC.
Set to take place from October 2024 to October 2025, the Towards Leadership Programme features an innovative curriculum spread across two in-person workshops and one online workshop. This curriculum is meticulously crafted to not only boost the participants’ research and leadership skills but also to level the playing field, allowing these promising scientists to vie for significant global health research funding opportunities successfully. The programme’s focus areas include securing grant funding, leading effective research teams, forging international collaborations, engaging with key stakeholders, and cultivating a fulfilling research career.
Participants of the AREF-MRC Towards Leadership Programme can expect to have their workshop costs, including travel and accommodation, fully covered by MRC and AREF. Eligible applicants must be citizens of an African country, employed in Africa by a recognized university or research institution, and be in the early stages of establishing their own research group. Applicants should hold a relevant research doctorate or a medical/clinical qualification plus a research-focused Master’s degree, with allowances made for those who have taken career breaks. Furthermore, applicants should have experience in managing research teams and securing research funding.
The selection process for the programme is rigorous, focusing on the applicants’ potential to impact their home institutions and the broader health research landscape. A persuasive personal statement, a supporting letter from a senior institutional representative, and a commitment to full participation in all programme workshops are essential components of the application.
Important dates to remember include the application deadline on May 6, 2024, with successful candidates being notified by mid-July 2024. For those interested in applying, it’s a unique opportunity to advance your research career and make a significant impact on global health.
