Empowering the next generation of women in STEM is crucial as they currently represent only 28% of the workforce in these fields, despite making up over half of college-educated professionals globally. The barriers for women and girls in STEM, predominantly male-dominated sectors, are significant, which is why our dedicated program aims to change this narrative and foster a sustainable future through increased female participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
To this end, we’re thrilled to announce a scholarship that offers a 12-week, all-virtual program developed in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania. This initiative focuses on critical and emerging STEM skills, global competency education, and social impact. Participants will engage in an interactive curriculum that enhances their STEM knowledge while building essential skills such as problem-solving, analytical thinking, and intercultural communication. The program is designed not only to educate but also to inspire scholars to apply their knowledge to real-world problems, particularly in areas like climate change and energy transition.
Upon completion, scholars will receive the Advanced Certificate on Global Competence for Social Impact, jointly awarded by AFS and the University of Pennsylvania Center for Social Impact Strategy. This program is generously funded by bp, a leading global energy company, underscoring their commitment to supporting educational initiatives that foster diversity and inclusion.
Eligibility for this prestigious program includes young women aged 15 to 17.5 from any part of the world, with a curiosity about STEM and sustainability, and the ability to engage fully in an English-language academic setting. We particularly encourage applications from talented young women from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds, including those with high financial need.
For those interested in applying, the application process for the first cohort opens on February 1, with a deadline of March 17. The program for the first cohort runs from May 4 to August 4, followed by a second cohort beginning on August 24. Applications for the second cohort are due by July 1.
