The Global Africa Translation Fellowship offers a unique opportunity for scholars around the world to engage in critical translation projects outside the confines of The Africa Institute’s campus in Sharjah, UAE. With a generous funding range of $1,000 to $5,000, the fellowship is open to a wide array of projects including, but not limited to, retranslations of classic texts, translations of previously untranslated works, as well as poetry, prose, and collections of critical theory. This non-residential program is particularly aimed at projects that can be completed within the grant’s timeframe, offering a substantial boost to scholars aiming to make African and African Diaspora studies more accessible internationally.

Interested applicants are invited to apply by June 1, 2024, and should be prepared to submit a comprehensive application packet. This includes a two-page CV highlighting educational qualifications and key accomplishments, a detailed project narrative, a sample of the original text along with the translation, and documentation regarding copyright status if necessary. The fellowship is keenly competitive, with selections made based on the quality of the proposal and the applicant’s ability to complete the project. Successful applicants will receive funding in two instalments and are required to provide The Africa Institute with a copy of the completed translation for archival purposes.

To apply, applicants must consolidate their statement, sample work, copyright information (if applicable), and CV into a single PDF file, named according to the format LASTNAME-FIRSTNAME.pdf, and submit this document via email to [email protected]. For further details and guidelines on the application process, prospective applicants are encouraged to visit the Africa Institute’s website. This fellowship represents a remarkable opportunity to contribute to the global dissemination of African knowledge and thought, reinforcing the Africa Institute’s commitment to fostering intellectual exchange and understanding across languages and cultures.
